~ Our Mission ~
The Church of Silk is an organization dedicated to honoring and inspiring the creative energy that flows from each of us. Rather than a denominational church as such, we are a diverse group woven together like fibers of silk: multidimensional, all-inclusive, and respectful of each other and the earth we belong to. Our mission is to spread the good word that WE are the change we wish to see in the world. An artist lives inside of each one of us, ready to burst forth into a thousand silky rainbows! The Church of Silk is YOU!
~ Why Silk? ~
Silk is a gift to humans from silkworms.
It never forgets how to fly.
Silk is magic to dance with.
~ Grace ~
by Amaya Papaya
I am humbled by the grace of silk.
Draped in its cloud-like caress,
I feel the tongue of early summer wind.
Spinning in a luminous flourish
I see undersea creatures,
nudibranchs, gorgonians, anemones.
I swim in delight; I dive in light.
In making a single flag,
I have stolen the craft of a million silkworms.
Toiling in an infinite dance,
they eschew miles of proteinaceous thread,
slender fibers to be spun and woven,
in pinprick knots.
These flags have flown
at mansions and in ghettos,
rooftops and basements.
They have seen sunsets on beaches,
sunrises over a naked lovers' bodies.
They have been lost to me, and returned,
borrowed, torn, repaired.
They have taught me how to dance.
According to Chinese legend,
the craft of silk was invented by
the young bride of an emperor
in 2700 BC.
She was 14 years old.
The silk carries a history
in its knot-woven threads.
I try to remember this story,
in my meditative dance;
pass on what I know,
through the grace of silk.
